Join the MI Dental Access Coalition

After two years of work with legislators and our state partners, SB 541 was introduced by Sen. Mike Shirkey (R-Clarklake) in early September 2017. The bill would establish a scope of practice and a licensing structure for dental therapists, including specific language to target this new professional for underserved communities and with populations that currently struggle to receive primary dental care.

Together we established the MI Dental Access Coalition and educated legislators about access challenges in our state for many populations that, because of their characteristics or their public insurance, are real and have a negative impact on their daily lives.
SB 541 was enacted with Governor Rick Snyder's signature on December 27, 2018--establishing PA 463.

Our work continues as we continue to advocate for oral health access, monitor the development of the licensing rules process for dental therapists through the state Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs, and assist state educational institutions interested in developing DT programs.
